  1. In mammals, a cavity at the upper end of the
  2. trachea (windpipe), containing the vocal
  3. cords. It is stiffened with cartilage and
  4. lined with mucous membrane. Amphibians and
  5. reptiles have much simpler larynxes, with no
  6. vocal cords. Birds have a similar cavity,
  7. called the syrinx, found lower down the
  8. trachea, where it branches to form the
  9. bronchi. It is very complex, with
  10. well-developed vocal cords.
